We have collected and tested over 500 color scenes 300 x 300 pixels in size , which are grouped into different affective contexts. The affective contexts are Direct-Threat, Indirect-Threat, Negative Past-Threat, and Neutral. The scenes in all four contexts include exemplars with potential threat objects or dangerous animals, as well as those without them. The archive of these stimuli is available for download here.

All scenes were tested in several surveys, with the item results available for download as an Excel file here.

Below is an explanation of the ratings.

New Name – we have recoded the scene names to include a code of what the scene contains. ‘A’ stands for animal, ‘W’ stands for weapon, ‘Y’ and ‘N’ indicate whether a weapon or dangerous animal is present in the scene.  ThDir is direct threat, ThInd is indirect threat, Neg is negative past threat, Neut is neutral.

Personal refers to the mean rating and standard deviation on the personal harm question in our surveys, Impers to the harm to others rating, and Past to the question on how much harm has already occurred in the past. The model fits are the best linear fit for a particular scenes to those three questions.
