MGH announces initiative to develop implantable device to treat PTSD and TBI
May 27, 2014
Martinos Center researchers and colleagues will launch a new research initiative designed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. The goal of the project, which is made possible by a $30 million grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is to develop an implantable deep brain stimulation (DBS) device that will monitor signals across multiple brain structures in real time. Based on the monitored activity, the device will be able to deliver stimulation to key areas to alleviate symptoms related to the disorders.
