Is Functional MRI The New X-Ray Vision?

March 24, 2016

In 1895, the introduction of X-ray transformed our understandings of the nature of seeing and knowing. Nearly a century later functional MRI did it all over again. We spoke with Bruce Rosen, the Director of the MGH Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, about how.

Predictive imaging of chemotherapeutic response in a transgenic mouse model of pancreatic cancer

The underglycosylated mucin 1 tumor antigen (uMUC1) is a biomarker that forecasts the progression of adenocarcinomas. In this study, we evaluated the utility of a dual-modality molecular imaging approach based on targeting uMUC1 for monitoring chemotherapeutic response in a transgenic murine model of pancreatic cancer (KCM triple transgenic mice). An uMUC1-specific contrast agent (MN-EPPT) was synthesized for use with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence optical imaging.

Multi-atlas and label fusion approach for patient-specific MRI based skull estimation

PURPOSE: MRI-based skull segmentation is a useful procedure for many imaging applications. This study describes a methodology for automatic segmentation of the complete skull from a single T1-weighted volume.

Thinking About a Task Is Associated with Increased Connectivity in Regions Activated by Task Performance

We investigated whether functional neuroimaging of quiet "rest" can reveal the neural correlates of conscious thought. Using resting-state functional MRI, we measured functional connectivity during a resting scan that immediately followed performance of a finger tapping motor sequence task. Self-reports of the amount of time spent thinking about the task during the resting scan correlated with connectivity between regions of the motor network activated during task performance.

Imaging Agonist-Induced D2/D3 Receptor Desensitization and Internalization In Vivo with PET/fMRI

This study investigated the dynamics of dopamine receptor desensitization and internalization, thereby proposing a new technique for non-invasive, in vivo measurements of receptor adaptations. The D2/D3 agonist quinpirole, which induces receptor internalization in vitro, was administered at graded doses in non-human primates while imaging with simultaneous positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A pronounced temporal divergence between receptor occupancy and fMRI signal was observed: occupancy remained elevated while fMRI responded transiently.

Multiple Brain Markers are Linked to Age-Related Variation in Cognition

Age-related alterations in brain structure and function have been challenging to link to cognition due to potential overlapping influences of multiple neurobiological cascades. We examined multiple brain markers associated with age-related variation in cognition.

Spatiotemporal Signatures of Lexical-Semantic Prediction

Although there is broad agreement that top-down expectations can facilitate lexical-semantic processing, the mechanisms driving these effects are still unclear. In particular, while previous electroencephalography (EEG) research has demonstrated a reduction in the N400 response to words in a supportive context, it is often challenging to dissociate facilitation due to bottom-up spreading activation from facilitation due to top-down expectations.

The Use of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in the Evaluation of Pediatric Patients With Seizures

BACKGROUND: The objective was to determine if it is useful to routinely add magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of seizure in the pediatric patient. Specifically, how often does MRS contribute information to conventional MRI?
METHODS: A retrospective search, over a period of 3 years, of patients
