Low-Cost, High-Performance MRI Opens New Opportunities For Brain Imaging

A team of investigators at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at the Massachusetts General Hospital has reported an approach to low-cost, high-performance MRI that could allow researchers and physicians to overcome many of the limitations of conventional MRI scanners.

Functional connectivity is associated with altered brain chemistry in women with endometriosis-associated chronic pelvic pain

In contrast to women with relatively asymptomatic endometriosis, women with endometriosis-associated chronic pelvic pain (CPP) exhibit non-pelvic hyperalgesia and decreased gray matter volume in key neural pain processing regions. While these findings suggest central pain amplification in endometriosis-associated CPP, the underlying changes in brain chemistry and function associated with central pain amplification remain unknown.

Intravoxel incoherent motion imaging kinetics during chemoradiotherapy for human papillomavirus-associated squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx: preliminary results from a prospective pilot study

This study aims to identify the temporal kinetics of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MRI in patients with human papillomavirus-associated (HPV+) oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Patients were enrolled under an Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved protocol as part of an ongoing prospective clinical trial. All patients underwent two MRI studies: a baseline scan before chemoradiotherapy and a mid-treatment scan 3-4 weeks after treatment initiation.

White Matter Changes are Associated with Ventricular Expansion in Aging, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Alzheimer's Disease

White matter lesions are highly prevalent in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although these lesions are presumed to be of vascular origin and linked to small vessel disease in older adults, little information exists about their relationship to markers of classical AD neurodegeneration. Thus, we examined the link between these white matter changes (WMC) segmented on T1-weighted MRI and imaging markers presumed to be altered due to primary AD neurodegenerative processes.

Imaging rhodopsin degeneration in vivo in a new model of ocular ischemia in living mice

Delivery of antibodies to monitor key biomarkers of retinopathy in vivo represents a significant challenge because living cells do not take up immunoglobulins to cellular antigens. We met this challenge by developing novel contrast agents for retinopathy, which we used with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Biotinylated rabbit polyclonal to chick IgY (rIgPxcIgY) and phosphorylthioate-modified oligoDNA (sODN) with random sequence (bio-sODN-Ran) were conjugated with NeutrAvidin-activated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION).

Asymmetric projections of the arcuate fasciculus to the temporal cortex underlie lateralized language function in the human brain

The arcuate fasciculus (AF) in the human brain has asymmetric structural properties. However, the topographic organization of the asymmetric AF projections to the cortex and its relevance to cortical function remain unclear. Here we mapped the posterior projections of the human AF in the inferior parietal and lateral temporal cortices using surface-based structural connectivity analysis based on diffusion MRI and investigated their hemispheric differences.

The Multimodal Brain Tumor Image Segmentation Benchmark (BRATS)

In this paper we report the set-up and results of the Multimodal Brain Tumor Image Segmentation Benchmark (BRATS) organized in conjunction with the MICCAI 2012 and 2013 conferences. Twenty state-of-the-art tumor segmentation algorithms were applied to a set of 65 multi-contrast MR scans of low- and high-grade glioma patients-manually annotated by up to four raters-and to 65 comparable scans generated using tumor image simulation software.
