fMRI of delayed albumin treatment during stroke recovery in rats: implication for fast neuronal habituation in recovering brains

Accumulating experimental and clinical data suggest that albumin may be neuroprotective for stroke. Here, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of albumin and its effects on the recovery of stimuli-induced cerebral hemodynamics. For this purpose, fMRI activity in the ipsilesional somatosensory (SS) cortex was assessed using a well established rat model of transient 90 min focal ischemia and electrical forelimb stimulation. Rats were treated with either saline or albumin via intracerebroventricular injections at 12 h post-stroke onset.

Somatosensory cortical plasticity in carpal tunnel syndrome treated by acupuncture

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common entrapment neuropathy of the median nerve characterized by paresthesias and pain in the first through fourth digits. We hypothesize that aberrant afferent input from CTS will lead to maladaptive cortical plasticity, which may be corrected by appropriate therapy. Functional MRI (fMRI) scanning and clinical testing was performed on CTS patients at baseline and after 5 weeks of acupuncture treatment. As a control, healthy adults were also tested 5 weeks apart.

Cortical thinning of the attention and executive function networks in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with structural alterations in brain networks influencing cognitive and motor behaviors. Volumetric studies in children identify abnormalities in cortical, striatal, callosal, and cerebellar regions. In a prior volumetric study, we found that ADHD adults had significantly smaller overall cortical gray matter, prefrontal, and anterior cingulate volumes than matched controls. Thickness and surface area are additional indicators of integrity of cytoarchitecture in the cortex.

Human neuroimaging studies suggest that localization and identification of relevant auditory objects are accomplished via parallel parietal-to-lateral-prefrontal "where" and anterior-temporal-to-inferior-frontal "what" pathways, respectively.

EEG/(f)MRI measurements at 7 Tesla using a new EEG cap ("InkCap")

We aimed at improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of electroencephalography (EEG) during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by introducing a new EEG cap ("InkCap") based on conductive ink technology. The InkCap was tested with temperature measurements on an electrically conductive phantom head and during structural and functional MRI (fMRI) recordings in 11 healthy human volunteers at 7 T. Combined EEG/fMRI measurements were conducted to study the interaction between the two modalities.

The real estate factor: quantifying the impact of infarct location on stroke severity

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The severity of the neurological deficit after ischemic stroke is moderately correlated with infarct volume. In the current study, we sought to quantify the impact of location on neurological deficit severity and to delineate this impact from that of volume.

Abnormal activation of the social brain during face perception in autism

ASD involves a fundamental impairment in processing social-communicative information from faces. Several recent studies have challenged earlier findings that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have no activation of the fusiform gyrus (fusiform face area, FFA) when viewing faces. In this study, we examined activation to faces in the broader network of face-processing modules that comprise what is known as the social brain. Using 3T functional resonance imaging, we measured BOLD signal changes in 10 ASD subjects and 7 healthy controls passively viewing nonemotional faces.

Remifentanil administration reveals biphasic phMRI temporal responses in rat consistent with dynamic receptor regulation

Many pharmacological stimuli influence multiple neurotransmitter systems in the brain, and the dynamics of the functional brain response can vary regionally. In this study, the temporal response of cerebral blood volume (CBV) was employed to spatially segment cerebral effects due to infusion of a potent mu-opioid receptor agonist. Repeated intravenous injection of 10 mug/kg remifentanil in rats caused reproducible regional positive, negative, and biphasic changes in CBV.
