Covariance modeling of MRI brain volumes in memory circuitry in schizophrenia: Sex differences are critical

Women have consistently demonstrated better verbal memory on tests that evaluate immediate and delayed free recall. In patients with schizophrenia, these verbal memory processes are relatively more preserved in women than men. However an understanding of the brain anatomy of the female advantage for verbal memory is still unclear. 29 females and 59 males with schizophrenia made comparable to 21 female and 27 male healthy volunteers were scanned using structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) in order to assess volumes of regions across the entire brain.

Imaging the functional connectivity of the Periaqueductal Gray during genuine and sham electroacupuncture treatment

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) is currently one of the most popular acupuncture modalities. However, the continuous stimulation characteristic of EA treatment presents challenges to the use of conventional functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) approaches for the investigation of neural mechanisms mediating treatment response because of the requirement for brief and intermittent stimuli in event related or block designed task paradigms.

Learning task-optimal registration cost functions for localizing cytoarchitecture and function in the cerebral cortex

Image registration is typically formulated as an optimization problem with multiple tunable, manually set parameters. We present a principled framework for learning thousands of parameters of registration cost functions, such as a spatially-varying tradeoff between the image dissimilarity and regularization terms. Our approach belongs to the classic machine learning framework of model selection by optimization of cross-validation error.

Multi-site characterization of an fMRI working memory paradigm: reliability of activation indices

Neuroimaging studies are facilitated significantly when it is possible to recruit subjects and acquire data at multiple sites. However, the use of different scanners and acquisition protocols is a potential source of variability in multi-site data. In this work we present a multi-site study of the reliability of fMRI activation indices, where 10 healthy volunteers were scanned at 4 different sites while performing a working memory paradigm.

Four-dimensional spectral-spatial RF pulses for simultaneous correction of B1+ inhomogeneity and susceptibility artifacts in T2*-weighted MRI

Susceptibility artifacts and excitation radiofrequency field B(1)+ inhomogeneity are major limitations in high-field MRI. Parallel transmission methods are promising for reducing artifacts in high-field applications. In particular, three-dimensional RF pulses have been shown to be useful for reducing B(1)+ inhomogeneity using multiple transmitters due to their ability to spatially shape the slice profile.

Targeted probes for cardiovascular MRI

Molecular MRI plays an important role in studying molecular and cellular processes associated with heart disease. Targeted probes that recognize important biomarkers of atherosclerosis, apoptosis, necrosis, angiogenesis, thrombosis and inflammation have been developed. This review discusses the properties of chemically different contrast agents including iron oxide nanoparticles, gadolinium-based nanoparticles or micelles, discrete peptide conjugates and activatable probes.

Cortical depth-specific microvascular dilation underlies laminar differences in blood oxygenation level-dependent functional MRI signal

Changes in neuronal activity are accompanied by the release of vasoactive mediators that cause microscopic dilation and constriction of the cerebral microvasculature and are manifested in macroscopic blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional MRI (fMRI) signals. We used two-photon microscopy to measure the diameters of single arterioles and capillaries at different depths within the rat primary somatosensory cortex. These measurements were compared with cortical depth-resolved fMRI signal changes.

Early experience of translating pH-weighted MRI to image human subjects at 3 Tesla

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In acute stroke, mismatch between lesions seen on diffusion- (DWI) and perfusion-weighted (PWI) MRI has been used to identify ischemic tissue before irreversible damage. Nevertheless, the concept of PWI/DWI mismatch is oversimplified and the ischemic tissue metabolic status and outcome are often heterogeneous. Tissue pH, a well-regulated physiological index that alters on disrupted tissue metabolism, may provide a surrogate metabolic imaging marker that augments the DWI and PWI for penumbra imaging.
