Intact hemispheric specialization for spatial and shape working memory in schizophrenia

OBJECTIVE: Using functional MRI, we investigated whether, like healthy subjects, patients with schizophrenia show a relative hemispheric specialization in ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) for spatial and shape working memory (WM). We hypothesized that reduced specialization in schizophrenia would reflect a failure to adopt optimal domain-specific strategies and would contribute to WM deficits.

Nonstationary noise estimation in functional MRI

An important issue in functional MRI analysis is accurate characterisation of the noise processes present in the data. Whilst conventional fMRI noise representations often assume stationarity (or time-invariance) in the noise generating sources, such approaches may serve to suppress important dynamic information about brain function. As an alternative to these fixed temporal assumptions, we present in this paper two time-varying procedures for examining nonstationary noise structure in fMRI data.

Functional MRI using regularized parallel imaging acquisition

Parallel MRI techniques reconstruct full-FOV images from undersampled k-space data by using the uncorrelated information from RF array coil elements. One disadvantage of parallel MRI is that the image signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is degraded because of the reduced data samples and the spatially correlated nature of multiple RF receivers. Regularization has been proposed to mitigate the SNR loss originating due to the latter reason. Since it is necessary to utilize static prior to regularization, the dynamic contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) in parallel MRI will be affected.

Optimal linear inverse solution with multiple priors in diffuse optical tomography

A general framework for incorporating single and multiple priors in diffuse optical tomography is described. We explore the use of this framework for simultaneously utilizing spatial and spectral priors in the context of imaging breast cancer. The utilization of magnetic resonance images of water and lipid content as a statistical spatial prior for the diffuse optical image reconstructions is also discussed. Simulations are performed to demonstrate the significant improvement in image quality afforded by combining spatial and spectral priors.

Meditation experience is associated with increased cortical thickness

Previous research indicates that long-term meditation practice is associated with altered resting electroencephalogram patterns, suggestive of long lasting changes in brain activity. We hypothesized that meditation practice might also be associated with changes in the brain's physical structure. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess cortical thickness in 20 participants with extensive Insight meditation experience, which involves focused attention to internal experiences.

Separate processing of different global-motion structures in visual cortex is revealed by FMRI

The visual system has the remarkable ability to extract several types of meaningful global-motion signals, such as radial motion, translation motion, and rotation, for different visual functions and actions. In the monkey brain, different groups of cells in MST respond best to different types of global motion [1, 2] whereas in lower cortical areas including MT, no such differential responses have been found. Here, we show that an area (or areas) lower than MST in the human brain [3] responds to different types of global motion.

The neural substrate of arithmetic operations and procedure complexity

Recent functional neuroimaging studies have begun to clarify how the human brain performs the everyday activities that require mental calculation. We used fMRI to test the hypotheses that there are specific neural networks dedicated to performing an arithmetic operation (e.g. + or -) and to performing processes that support more complex calculations.

3T phased array MRI improves the presurgical evaluation in focal epilepsies: a prospective study

Measurements of BOLD/CBV ratio show altered fMRI hemodynamics during stroke recovery in rats

Brain responses to external stimuli after permanent and transient ischemic insults have been documented using cerebral blood volume weighted (CBVw) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in correlation with tissue damage and neurological recovery. Here, we extend our previous studies of stroke recovery in rat models of focal cerebral ischemia by comparing blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) changes. Responses to forepaw stimulation were measured in normal rats (n=5) and stroke rats subjected to 2 h of middle cerebral artery occlusion (n=6).
