Conversion of ischemic brain tissue into infarction increases with age

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Brain regions normal on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) but abnormal on mean transit time (MTT) maps represent tissue at risk of infarction, yet the fate of these regions is quite variable. The imperfect correlation between tissue outcome and initial imaging parameters suggests that each patient's brain may have different susceptibility to ischemic stress. We hypothesize that age is a marker for tissue susceptibility to ischemia and thus plays a role in determining tissue outcome in human stroke.

Transient ischemic attack with infarction: a unique syndrome?

It is debated whether transient symptoms associated with infarction (TSI) are best considered a minor ischemic stroke, a subtype of transient ischemic attack (TIA), or a separate ischemic brain syndrome. We studied clinical and imaging features to establish similarities and differences among ischemic stroke, TIA without infarction, and TSI. Eighty-seven consecutive patients with TIA and 74 patients with ischemic stroke were studied. All underwent diffusion-weighted imaging on admission. Symptom duration and infarct volume were determined in each group.

An evidence-based causative classification system for acute ischemic stroke

Regular, evidence-based assignment of patients to etiologic stroke categories is essential to enable valid comparison among studies. We designed an algorithm (SSS-TOAST) that incorporated recent advances in stroke imaging and epidemiology to identify the most probable TOAST category in the presence of evidence for multiple mechanisms. Based on the weight of evidence, each TOAST subtype was subdivided into 3 subcategories as "evident", "probable", or "possible". Classification into the subcategories was determined via predefined specific clinical and imaging criteria.

Bayesian analysis of the neuromagnetic inverse problem with l(p)-norm priors

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) allows millisecond-scale non-invasive measurement of magnetic fields generated by neural currents in the brain. However, localization of the underlying current sources is ambiguous due to the so-called inverse problem. The most widely used source localization methods (i.e., minimum-norm and minimum-current estimates (MNE and MCE) and equivalent current dipole (ECD) fitting) require ad hoc determination of the cortical current distribution (l(2)-, l(1)-norm priors and point-sized dipolar, respectively).

Detection of entorhinal layer II using 7Tesla [corrected] magnetic resonance imaging

The entorhinal cortex lies in the mediotemporal lobe and has major functional, structural, and clinical significance. The entorhinal cortex has a unique cytoarchitecture with large stellate neurons in layer II that form clusters. The entorhinal cortex receives vast sensory association input, and its major output arises from the layer II and III neurons that form the perforant pathway. Clinically, the neurons in layer II are affected with neurofibrillary tangles, one of the two pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease.

Q-ball imaging

Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides a powerful tool for mapping neural histoarchitecture in vivo. However, DTI can only resolve a single fiber orientation within each imaging voxel due to the constraints of the tensor model. For example, DTI cannot resolve fibers crossing, bending, or twisting within an individual voxel. Intravoxel fiber crossing can be resolved using q-space diffusion imaging, but q-space imaging requires large pulsed field gradients and time-intensive sampling.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging during auditory verbal working memory in nonpsychotic relatives of persons with schizophrenia: a pilot study

BACKGROUND: First-degree relatives of persons with schizophrenia carry elevated genetic risk for the illness and show deficits on high-load information processing tasks. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to test whether nonpsychotic relatives show altered functional activation in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), thalamus, hippocampus, and anterior cingulate during a working memory task requiring interference resolution.

A hybrid approach to the skull stripping problem in MRI

We present a novel skull-stripping algorithm based on a hybrid approach that combines watershed algorithms and deformable surface models. Our method takes advantage of the robustness of the former as well as the surface information available to the latter. The algorithm first localizes a single white matter voxel in a T1-weighted MRI image, and uses it to create a global minimum in the white matter before applying a watershed algorithm with a preflooding height.

Persistence of parahippocampal representation in the absence of stimulus input enhances long-term encoding: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of subsequent memory after a delayed match-to-sample task

Recent theoretical models based on cellular processes in parahippocampal structures show that persistent neuronal spiking in the absence of stimulus input is important for encoding. The goal of this study was to examine in humans how sustained activity in the parahippocampal gyrus may underlie long-term encoding as well as active maintenance of novel information.

Understanding other minds: linking developmental psychology and functional neuroimaging

Evidence from developmental psychology suggests that understanding other minds constitutes a special domain of cognition with at least two components: an early-developing system for reasoning about goals, perceptions, and emotions, and a later-developing system for representing the contents of beliefs.
